During World War I she worked in the press department of the Missouri Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense, eventually becoming vice chair. Representing Missouri on the Democratic National Committee, Blair was chosen national vice chair responsible for organizing women voters and women's activities, and eventually rose to first vice president, organized 2,000 plus Democratic women's clubs, and helped found the Woman's National Democratic Club. In 1935, she was appointed to the Consumers' Advisory Board of the National Recovery Administration, and, in 1942, was appointed chief of the Women's Interest Section of the War Department's Public Relations Bureau. Her husband, Harry Wallace Blair, was U.S. Assistant Attorney General in the Land Div. of the Justice Dept. in the 1930s and later served with the President's Loyalty Review Board. The collection consists of personal, professional and family correspondence, published and unpublished writings by and about Emily Blair, diaries, speeches, personal and family memorabilia, and clippings. Series I and II form the bulk of the collection, Series II being largely Emily Blair's personal writings, such as diaries, speeches, published articles, typescripts of fiction and non-fiction, and typescripts of her autobiography. Blair family material consists of the papers of Harry Wallace Blair (husband), Harriet Blair Forsythe (daughter), James Patton and Anna Gray Newell (parents), and her McDowell family ancestors of Pennsylvania, particularly the correspondence of Alexander McDowell. The collection is useful for researching the history of women and the family in the early 20th century, the issues of feminism and women's suffrage, and the emergence of women as politicians within the Democratic Party. Voinovich | | | | Dates: | 1977-1989 | | | | Abstract: | George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate. The collection consists of the mayor's office files transferred in 1989 to the Western Reserve Historical Society as an agent of the Ohio State Archives under the Ohio Public Records Law. Walter Nord was the president of U. S. Automatic Corporation (f. 1909) of Amherst, Ohio, a company which manufactured screw machine parts for the automotive industry. Walter Nord and his sons, Evan and Eric Nord, organized the Nordson Corporation in 1954 as a subsidiary of U. S. Automatic Corporation. The Nordson Corporation, headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, is a multinational company that designs, manufactures, and markets systems that apply adhesives, sealants, and coatings to a broad range of consumer and industrial products during the manufacturing process. The Nordson Foundation was a philanthropic organization which provided financial support primarily in the areas of public service, social problems, family services, and education. The Nord family, including Walter's sons Eric and Evan Nord, and Cleveland lawyer William Ginn, guided the foundation through 1980. In 1988 the foundation was reorganized to create the Nord Family Foundation and the Nordson Corporation Foundation. Since its inception, the Nord Family Foundation has primarily served Lorain County, Ohio, and has been based in the Lorain-Elyria area. As of 1993, the foundation was headquartered in Elyria, Ohio. Its charitable activities, however, have sometimes reached into neighboring locales, particularly Cuyahoga County and Cleveland, and touched other areas of Ohio and the nation. In addition to the foundation, the Nord family is also noted for its involvement in the development of inventions, including innovations in areas as diverse as spray painters and robotics. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, minutes of the board of trustees, policies and procedures, a mission statement, resolutions, correspondence, financial reports, contract bids and specifications, newspaper clippings, memoranda, pamphlets, publications, accounting journals, budgets, tax returns, affidavits, and materials related to projects and activities of the foundation, with grant proposals (1980-1984) compromising the bulk of the materials. The files include the minutes, cases, photographs, and organizational materials of the Neighborhood Concepts Company (1984-1986), a Lorain-Elyria housing rehabilitation program initiated through the funding of the Nordson Foundation. | | | | Creator: | Voinovich, George V. | | | | Dates: | 1979-2003 | | | | Abstract: | George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate. Each year, the National Organization for Women and Womenspace confers the Josephine Irwin Award to women contributing to women's rights. The collection consists of photographs depicting Irwin and others at various events, including the Fairview Park Senior Citizens Club Christmas party (1964), the Rocky River Research Club Colonial party (1932), and the Tokyo Women's Club Tea (1966).
